HR woes continued

// June 27th, 2007 // Brad's Life, Springfield, UIS

For previous story, see this post.

It really isn’t an error that if you go to the UIS Human Resources page and click on ‘Organization’ at the top, there is nothing there.  Why have an ‘Organization’ page when there is absolutely no organization whatsoever in your department?

Wednesday the 27th, and still no vacation payout check.  Friday will be a month since my last day there.   Now that I don’t have a check, we can’t close our Marine Bank account while in town this weekend as planned, so it has to sit there until we go to Springfield again in July or August. (I can’t close it because the check comes through direct deposit).

Am I really asking for too much?  Really… I guess am not surprised.  This comes from the same department that moved my original start date from January 2nd to February 16th (after knowing about the position since Oct/November) because they were too slow with paperwork.   Seriously, every time I ever went in there it seemed like everyone (except Bob, who rocks and is the most helpful person there) was sitting around staring at the walls. And when my exit interview was 30 minutes late because the person who personally scheduled the appointment with me on the phone put it in the middle of a staff meeting, and never worried about contacting me to tell me of the mixup.

Let’s do a little break down of my experiences here.

Time between acceptance of position and start date:
Butler HR: 2 months
UIS HR: 2 months

Actual Start Date:
Butler HR: As planned
UIS HR: 45 day delay due to paperwork

Paperwork (Taxes, direct deposit, employee information)
Butler HR: All completed 1 month prior to arrival
UIS HR: First day of work — walk to HR — “Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…. we don’t have your PITR.  Are you sure you start today?”

Welcome Package
Butler HR: Confirmation of salary, pay dates, and a Welcome to Indianapolis packet.
UIS HR: Huh?

First day at University
Butler: Welcome Breakfast and Lunch, decorated office with pennants, choice of chair, free Butler fleece and polo.
UIS: Person I was supposed to report to: MIA. Office: not ready (for 4 months).  Stuck in office with 2 GA’s.  First day, **** says “Here, read all of these brochures so you can learn more about UIS.”

Name on Door
Butler HR: at arrival
UIS HR: 7 months

Benefits Enrollment
Butler HR: Go smoothly, everything mailed to me in 1 week.
UIS HR: Paperwork mistake leaves Jen off coverage for 1 1/2 months after wedding, which we find out after a Dr. visit that ends up costing us a couple hundred $$.

Exit Interview
Butler HR: not in foreseeable future
UIS HR: Scheduled, then 30 minutes late because the meeting was double booked with a weekly staff meeting.

Payout
Butler HR: not in foreseeable future
UIS HR: I think you know by now.

Now, some might say “Well, that’s the difference between private and public.”  BS.

HR is HR is HR, it’s all the same.  Maybe UIS couldn’t afford a welcome breakfast or a free UIS fleece, but they sure could get their act together and learn how to handle some friggin paperwork.  Good grief.

I love the stats. Journaling HR woes is a good idea because instead of having to explain everything I went through with Dell Financial Services I could just point them to my blog, thus getting my blog a little more exposure at the same time.
