Garmin GPS: 1 Year Review

// July 30th, 2007 // 1 Comment » // Brad's Life, GPS, Technology, Travel

A little over 1 year ago, I entered the world of GPS. People who know me definitely know that I like to be on time, know where I’m going, and how I’m going to get there. For me, GPS just seemed like a good idea. I love facts and numbers, and that’s all a part of using GPS.

one year of wedded bliss.

That’s right, Jen and I have been married for a year now! Hard to believe. Everyone says the first year is the hardest, but we thought it was pretty darn fun.

We’ve had a lot of great times this past year, we’ve moved, we’ve gotten jobs (twice), and we have a lot more to look forward to!

You’re my best friend and I’ll love you always Jen!

Twosouth Thursday: Sangamon Auditorium Cart Toss

Twosouth Thursday Episode #8: Sangamon Auditorium Cart Toss

This was a classic night. Angela Becker had ‘borrowed’ a shopping cart from a store, and we ‘borrowed’ it from her. After playing with it, pushing it around campus, etc, we eventually wound up….. on top of the Sangamon Auditorium?!?! So there was only one thing left to do: throw it.

Funny thing about this video from behind the scenes: Dickie forgot to press record the first time, so this is actually the 2nd time we did it. We taped the shopping cart back together with duct tape, which is why it basically folds on impact. It sounded like a shotgun when it hit, and it was a great thrill.

Even funnier: The UIS Police Beat read as follows: 3:56am — several subjects are noticed leaving LRH with a shopping cart. The subjects return later with the shopping cart folded up. Police are unable to locate subjects.

Like there was any doubt who did it. Thanks for the lookout BigBrother :) (BigBrother was the police dispatcher who also frequented our forums and generally kept us informed).

Internet, Terabytes, Broken Mac, Phones, and da Police.

What a conglomeration of a post we have going on here.  My posting ability has been extremely hindered by topic #1, so I have to resort to posting over my lunch break when I should be doing more important things like warming up week old pizza from the fridge (thanks Pam!) and playing sudoku.

Topic #1: Wireless Internet (or lack thereof)
Yes, my good buddy LINKSYS has moved out.  DAVISNET is unencrypted, but I can only get a 20% signal.  That’s not enough to stream BellaTheBeagle.com. The options: Spend some time trying to figure out the key for NETGEAR, 10360, or AnimalHouse (you’d be surprised how unoriginal people who password their router actually are), or break down and pay for internet for the first time in a few years.  Jen was always adamant about actually paying for the service once she got a job, so I guess that wish comes true.

Topic #2:  Terabyte(s)
Terabyte doesn’t sound as cool as terabytes, but I now have 1. One. Terabyte.  250gb internal + 250gb internal + 250gb Firewire external  + 250 gb usb 2.0 external = 1.0 Terabyte of disk space on my computer. Current use = 600 gb.  Pictures + Backups = 350 gb.  10’s of 1000’s of photos.  Geesh.

Topic #3: Broken Mac
Tonight I drop my Macbook off at the Apple store at Keystone for 7-10 days for some warranty work.  I was having the screen flicker problem, and it went out over the weekend.  Drat.   I figure if I get it in now I might have it back in time for our quarterly trip to Florida in August.  Fingers crossed.  Everything’s backed up (refer to Topic #2), so it’s all good.

Topic #4: Cell Phone
My phone has started to crap out and randomly shut off, drop calls, etc.  I am due for an upgrade in December.  I hope a 2nd gen iPhone comes out before Christmas.

Topic #5: Da Police
There is this thug wannabe white boy near our apartment who is always trying to act hard, throw stuff at geese, stuff like that.  Last night I saved his butt though.  He had obviously been mouthing off to someone, who decided to beat down the little punk.  I could hear him getting yelled at and shoved around the parking lot from ~200 yards away, with my TV on.  So I dialed the po-lice and within 3 minutes there were 6 cops there. It was pretty nuts.  I’ve seen him in handcuffs before, but they cuffed him again tonight, so I wonder if there was more to it.

Topic #8 (Topic 1+Topic3+Topic4 = Topic8):  Did you say iPhone?!?
As much as I can’t stand the things the first generation lacks,  I still sit there and caress the darn thing every time I go in to the Apple store (tonight will be the 4th time this week).  Looking at the other topics (no internet, no laptop, no phone), I casually suggested to Jen that an iPhone would remedy all of my wants. (These are obviously not needs).  Her look back at me cannot easily be put into words.   Love ya babe. :)

That’s about it for now.  Gonna go warm up that pizza.

Discuss topics now.

Twosouth Thursday: Kyle Gets A New Phone

Twosouth Thursday Episode #7: Kyle Gets A New Phone

Somewhere between being shot with airguns getting shaving creamed, Kyle’s phone got broken. What’s a friend to do? Buy a new one! This video is in honor of Kyle heading to DC soon, and his going away drinkfest in Springfield tomorrow night. He’s all grown up now… or is he? ;)

$50 in under 30 minutes. Funnier story: A few weeks later he was going to the bathroom in Emily/Betsy’s bathroom for some reason. The story gets mixed from here, but a chain reaction of events led Kyle to drop his NEW phone in the toilet. Score!

My Dog has a website now. :)

Check it out!  We set up a webcam so we can see what she does during the day.  If the camera is not on (i.e. we are at home), then you will just see some rotating images on the screen. Otherwise, it’s Bella Time!

I want to set up something that allows me to press a button and a treat dispenses to her, but that’s another project for another month.

Bella: The Great Escape

// July 17th, 2007 // 2 Comments » // Bella, Brad's Life

Let me give you a little background to this video. Now that Jen will be teaching in the fall, we have been trying to decide what to do with Bella during the day. Doggie Daycare at $30/day? HECK NO. Have someone come let her out? Kinda creepy. Leave her in her kennel all day? Extreme boredom and likelihood of excessive barking. Set up a space for her on a hard surface in case she goes to the bathroom? Sounds like a plan.

I just needed to put this somewhere for future reference since I’m already married.
