I’ve never flown Skybus, but I like them already. Back in October (my birthday, actually) I got the email saying that the $10 flights were available for Spring 2008. $10 flights?! That’s right. Every flight has ten $10 seats, but they only fly from Columbus, OH to 10 or so destinations and back. Luckily, we’re about 3 hrs from Columbus. As I rolled out of bed and picked up my iPhone, it was the first email sitting in my inbox. (Note: at this point, I think I mumbled something like “Look at the money we’re gonna save Jen, it’s basically paying for itself.”
So we pulled out her calendar and booked some tickets for her Spring Break. The problem: the only $10 flights left to Fort Myers, FL at the time were Tuesday and Thursday. So we booked.
Now, here are the options we had:
1) Go to Florida Tuesday-Thursday. Brad works Monday, leaves for 3 days, comes back Friday. Weird workweek.
2) Go somewhere else. Pizza Convention in Las Vegas with parents the weekend before, then fly to Florida from there, and end up back in Indy. Let 1 way of $10 tickets to go waste.
3) Pony up and pay the extra for an extended trip.
So we pondered for awhile over break (deciding how long to stay in Florida while sitting in 86 degree weather in Florida could possibly be construed as an ‘impulse decision), and decided it would be best to just wait and see how things pan out, especially with house closing in less than a week at the time ($$).
So yesterday I get an email from Skybus:
You are receiving this email because the Skybus flight time(s) for your upcoming trip have changed. Because your new flight time(s) is more than 3 hours later than your original flight, you have several options from which to choose. (1) Stay on My Current Flight. (2)Choose Different Flight, No Charge. You may change the date(s) of your flight as long as it is to the same destination within 5 days of your original your flight. There is no change fee for this option. (3) Cancel & Request A Refund.
LOOPHOLE! They gave us the option to pick a new flight within 5 days (all the way back to the Friday before). Being March/April, this is prime Spring Break season, and here they are offering us our choice. They understand it. They get it, and other big airlines don’t. Giving us a $200 seat for our original $10 is still going to make them $10 more than an empty seat, and it’s going to give us a positive impression for future business. Well played, Skybus.
Long story short: We’re flying out on a Saturday and coming back on a Thursday. 6 days in FL, $70 total for 2 roundtrip tickets. Booyah.
